No proof MMR vaccination offers protection against Covid-19, says Serum Institute

PUNE: Pune-based vaccine major Serum Institute of India (SII) said there is no direct evidence to prove that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine offers protection against Covid-19. ,The SII is one of the key manufacturers of the MMR vaccine in the country.
The institute’s statement to TOI on Sunday comes amidst nationwide reports of adults queuing up for MMR vaccination in hopes of a defence against the coronavirus. After over six months of novel coronavirus outbreak, which has infected more than 12 million people and killed over 500,000 all over the world, the clinical trials of the purportedly world's first coronavirus vaccine have been successfully completed. ,The clinical trials of the world's first coronavirus vaccine on volunteers at Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University has been successfully completed, Vadim Tarasov, the director of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, according to Russian news agency Sputnik, adding that the first group of volunteers would be discharged on 15 July and the second on 20 July.

India to reduce over-dependence on Chinese pharmaceutical raw materials

India is considering importing certain active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediaries from alternative sources such as the United States, Italy, Singapore and Hong Kong, leading to ramping up domestic capacity in a bid to reduce dependence on China, two officials aware of development said.
Over 63 per cent of India’s pharmaceutical imports are API and intermediates, and almost 70 per cent of it comes from China. Dependence on a single country for such crucial thing is not prudent in India’s national interest, hence there is a need to diversify its sourcing and develop domestic capacity, the officials said requesting anonymity.

Delhi: Doctor, associate arrested for issuing fake medical certificates to help criminals get bail

The team of STARS-2, Crime Branch has arrested one doctor Gajender Kumar Nayyar and his associate Mukesh Sangwan for their involvement in issuing fake medical certificates to accused, convicts. They were also involved in issuing the fake medical documents to family members of accused and convicts for extraneous consideration to facilitate them in obtaining favorable orders of bail, interim bail and suspension of sentence. Accused Mukesh Sangwan used to provide clients to the doctor.
On June 29, High Court of Delhi passed an order on bail application in case of Abdul Rehman Nawali Vs State to conduct an inquiry into the allegations raised by the prosecution that Dr Gajender Kumar Nayyar is issuing fake medical certificates. During the enquiry, it was found that Dr Gajender Kumar Nayyar is registered with Delhi Medical Council and is under suspension till November 29, 2020 for professional misconduct since March 29, 2019. During the suspension time he has been issuing medical certificates. A case under appropriate sections was registered at PS Crime Branch, Delhi and investigation was taken up.

COVID-19 vaccine: India to begin human clinical trials; Patna AIIMS selects 18 volunteeers

After Russia became the first country to successfully conclude human trials for the world's premier coronavirus vaccine, India is set to begin the human clinical trials for vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the dreaded coronavirus disease (COVID-19). For the purpose of the trials, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Patna has selected 18 volunteers on whom the vaccine trails will be conducted. ,According to sources, the hospital authority is set to begin the human trials of the vaccine from today (i.e. July 13, Monday). ,Till now, only the Bharat Biotech International Ltd and the Zydus Cadila pharmaceutical companies' indigenously developed vaccine prototypes have got an approval for the human trials from the Drugs Controller General of India.
