State revises Covid-19 action plan to arrest spurt in cases

VISAKHAPATNAM: The state health department has drafted a refocused action plan in view of the sudden surge in Covid-19 cases over the last few weeks. The two major objectives of the action plan are to reduce the time gap between the onset of Covid-19 symptoms and detection of the case to a maximum of 24 hours, and give the doctors ample time to restore the health of the patient to reduce the mortality rate to below 1%, that is, detection to death of a positive case should be six days in the event of death.....read more

Covid-19 update: AIIMS to start clinical trial of indigenous vaccine Covaxin from Monday

NEW DELHI : The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Ethics Committee on Saturday gave its approval for conducting the human clinical trial of the indigenously developed COVID-19 vaccine candidate Covaxin.
Dr Sanjay Rai, Professor at the Centre for Community Medicine at AIIMS told ANI that the hospital will start enrolling healthy individuals from Monday onwards.
"Today, we got approval from AIIMS Ethics Committee for starting the human clinical trial of the indigenously developed Covaxin. We are launching the enrollment process from Monday. We are going to select healthy participants with no comorbidities and without a history of COVID-19. The age group of the study population is 18 to 55 years. This would be a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial," Dr Rai told ANI.

London: Klaus Stohr has urged governments for many years to prepare for the grim possibility of a pandemic.
In 2003, he played a key role in a World Health Organization investigation that swiftly identified a coronavirus as the cause of SARS. Stohr also sounded the alarm on the pandemic potential of avian flu, bringing countries and companies to the table to increase production of vaccines in case it began spreading widely in people.
In Covid-19, which has killed almost 600,000 people, the world faces the crisis that the virologist has long feared. Stohr, who left the WHO to join drugmaker Novartis AG in 2007 and retired a couple of years ago, paints a sobering picture. He spoke with Bloomberg by phone, and his remarks have been edited for clarity and readability:

Coronavirus India News Live Updates: With nearly 39,000 new cases reported in the past 24 hours, the total number of coronavirus infections rose to over 10.7 lakh. At least 543 deaths were reported, taking the casualties to 26,816. While 3,73,379 are active patients, as many as 6.7 lakh patients have already recovered.
Maharashtra, the worst-affected state, crossed the three-lakh mark on Saturday with Mumbai reporting over 1 lakh coronavirus cases so far. Maharashtra has now more cases than the United Kingdom, which has till now reported over 2.95 lakh infections. The national capital, on the other hand is projecting an uplifting trend. For 17 of the last 20 days, including 11 in a row now, the number of people recovering from Covid in Delhi has remained higher than newly detected infections — no other state has come close to such a trend.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi will start enrolling healthy individuals from Monday for conducting the human clinical trial of Covaxin, the indigenously developed Covid-19 vaccine candidate. ,This comes after AIIMS’s Ethics Committee gave its nod for a human clinical trial of Covaxin on Saturday. ,AIIMS Delhi is among the 12 institutes selected by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) for conducting phase I and II human trials of Covaxin. The vaccine would be tested on 375 volunteers during phase I and the maximum of 100 of them would be from AIIMS. ,“We are launching the enrollment process from Monday. We are going to select healthy participants with no comorbidities and without a history of Covid-19,” Dr Sanjay Rai, a professor at AIIMS’ Centre for Community Medicine, said, according to news agency ANI.
